Meet the Edington Next Practice Award Winners

The Next Practice Award recognizes organizations that are actively engaged in the pursuit of a healthy, high-performing workplace and workforce. The award specifically acknowledges companies that demonstrate unique approaches to improving the well-being of workplaces and employees, and excel in innovation and initiatives.

Winners of the Next Practice Awards were selected based on the five pillars of successful pursuit of achieving a healthy work environment: 1) Senior Leadership, 2) Operational Leadership, 3) Self Leadership, 4) Recognition and Rewards, and 5) Quality Assurance.

Pillar 1: The McCarthy Building Companies‘ headquarters are located in St. Louis, Mo. This commercial construction company has been around for 150 years and is still going strong. McCarthy has 2,530 employees nationwide.

Pillar 2: Hastings Fiber Glass Products designs and fabricates fiber glass products and tools for the electrical power and communications industries. They are headquartered in Hastings, Mich., and have approximately 93 employees.

Pillar 3: Appriss is a company that offers software-based services and various technological solutions that help local, state, and federal criminal justice agencies keep communities safe and informed. The headquarters are located in Louisville, Ky., and the amount of employees has fluctuated from 150 to 499.

Pillar 3: IBM was founded in 1911. It is an American multinational technology and consulting corporation. They are headquartered in Armonk, N.Y., and employ about 426,751 people worldwide.

Pillar 4: Carlson was founded in 1938 and is a privately held international corporation that works in the hotel, restaurant, and travel industries. Carlson’s headquarters are in Minnetonka, Minn., near Minneapolis. This company has more than 170,000 employees internationally.

Pillar 5: Cerner is an international company. Their United States headquarters are located in Kansas City, Mo. This company focuses on improving health care delivery (lowering costs) and improving the health of communities. Cerner has over 7,500 employees worldwide.

Seven organizations were also selected as Great Beginnings Honorees. The Great Beginnings category recognizes organizations that are on the path to being honored as Next Practice Award winners. The Great Beginnings recognitions also followed the five pillars of success.

Pillar 1: Mercury Insurance opened in 1962 and offers a wide range of insurance coverage options from personal auto insurance to homeowners insurance as well as mechanical breakdown protection.  The headquarters for this company is located in Los Angeles. This company has about 5,000 employees nationwide.

Pillar 2: The mission of Minneapolis Public Schools is to ensure that all students learn. They want children to grow into knowledgeable, skilled, and confident citizens and hope to provide the tools for them to do so. Their headquarters are located in Minneapolis and they have around 5,900 employees overall.

Pillar 2: Tenet Healthcare Corporation has 50 hospitals in 11 states nationwide. The headquarters for this company are located in Dallas and they employ about 57,000 people. Their mission is to provide quality medical care and patient safety at all of their hospitals. They help other businesses carry out this mission of quality, as well, by evaluating processes used in the business and promoting best practices.

Pillar 3: Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) opened in 1963 as Ohio’s first community college. It is located in Cleveland. Their mission is to provide high quality, accessible and affordable educational opportunities and services.

Pillar 3: Saint Luke’s Health System is located in Kansas City, Mo. It is a non-profit, faith-based health system that has had a history of innovation in Kansas City since 1882. This company has 11 hospitals, 1,200 doctors, and 9,000 employees.

Pillar 4: Blue Valley School District is headquartered in Johnson County, Kan. This district employs about 3,000 people and is committed to academic excellence, giving their students “an education filled with opportunities”.

Pillar 5: Cancer Treatment Centers of America was founded in 1988. It is a private, for-profit operator of cancer treatment hospitals and outpatient clinics, providing both conventional and alternative medical treatments. They are headquartered in Schaumburg, Ill.
